Weeding

Weeding is an ongoing process of removing resources that are worn, outdated, unattractive, inappropriate in content, or of no further value to users.
  • Weeding Context
    Weeding is a systematic process based on:
    • the school's Collection Development Policy;
    • recognised Weeding Criteria [27KB Word doc], and
    • an analysis of the collection.

  • Weeding Considerations
    Resources are weeded by professional staff with knowledge of:
    • the curriculum
    • learning and teaching styles
    • child development
    • student achievement levels
    • collection development
    • weeding selection criteria
    Weeding is therefore the responsibility of the teacher librarian or resource teacher after discussion with the principal and other teachers. Library officers, parent volunteers and students assist where appropriate.

  • Identifying Resources for Weeding
    Resources for weeding can be identified through:
    • the use of recognised weeding criteria;
    • stocktaking;
    • collaboration with the principal and teachers, and
    • discussion and negotiation.
    • Weed of the Month Club
      This site for Florida school libraries suggests some interesting approaches to weeding that can be adapted in WA.
