Learning Task
The task can be introduced with a stimulus activity, for example by reading a story related to a boat trip (some titles are suggested below). The students brainstorm what they already know about boats and ships.
The teacher will then extend this knowledge through further literature. Students learn about a variety of different boats found on rivers and oceans and identify the key features of each. They learn how the features are related to the functions of each boat and the type of waterway on which they are used. These features and functions can be compared and contrasted.
Students investigate the features and functions of yachts further using the exterior and interior photos provided. For example, they may use print-outs of the photos to categorise features and functions, such as features related to meeting basic needs and other features related to sailing the yacht.
Finally, students complete a task that allows them to demonstrate their learning. For example, they might build a model boat of a particular type, create a design for the interior of a boat, or write a story or postcard based on experiences of being on a boat. |
