Clipper Race 2005-6
Educational Program

Building a team

Students explore the mechanisms of teamwork. They may find out what team-building activities the crews engaged in prior to departure, consider the value of team-building activities in their own lives and analyse the values important in a team situation.

Learning Task

A number of activities could develop these understandings, including:

  • investigating the team-building activities that the Clipper race crews were involved in prior to the race, trying out some of these activities and evaluating their effectiveness;
  • considering team-building activities that the students have been involved in, for example in the classroom or in sporting teams, and understanding how has it helped them to improve as a team player;
  • analysing the importance of ensuring a team works well together using examples from their own experience as well as from the crews;
  • exploring the values or virtues necessary for teams to work together, then creating a shared learning product such as: a “team virtues tree” chart in which leaves contain the chosen virtues; or a display of "values keels" with key values explained on the keels of yachts.

Students could demonstrate their learning in a number of other ways, including:

  • creating a poster or piece of writing that argues the 3 most important values;
  • creating a “home video” of team building activities and marketing it to a target audience;
  • creating a video from edited clips of crew interviews to demonstrate the answer to a focus question such as "can you explain one key value critical to success as a crew member?"
