What is Workers' Compensation?

Workers' Compensation provides assistance to injured employees. Weekly payments that cover loss of earning capacity, payment of medical expenses and rehabilitation expenses, assist them to remain at, or return to work.

An employee who is injured in the course of their work may apply to receive workers' compensation for the following:

  • a personal injury by accident arising out of or sustained during the course of his or her employment;
  • a disabling disease specified in the Act;
  • a recurrence, aggravation or acceleration of a pre-existing disease where his or her employment was a significant contributing factor;
  • a disease contracted by an employee in the course of his or her employment and to which the employment was a contributing factor to a significant degree;
  • a loss of function specified in the Act.

The Department has four workers' compensation officers managing claims for specific districts.
