Focus on Research Focus on Research

The Department of Education and Training recognises the importance of continued, quality research to strengthen the public education and training system in Western Australia.

Staff who have either completed or who are undertaking research at Masters or Doctorate levels have been invited to submit an abstract of their research to be published on the Departments website. It is hoped that this website will be used to share findings and establish connections among those staff that have engaged in research activity.

Professional Development Opportunities

The Department of Education and Training is committed to supporting professional development opportunities for trainers assessors and managers involved in the delivery of vocational education and training across the sectors in Western Australia

This program of opportunities has dates of when they will be delivered in Perth CBD but programs can come to you in regional or suburban locations - they can be customised and delivered at a time and venue to suit you (minimum of 12 participants).

Small Business
Smart Business Program

Small Business Smart Business Program
(11 February 2008 - 31 December 2008)

The 2008 Small Business Smart Business Program, provides small business owner/operators in Western Australia with training vouchers up to the value of $200.

These training vouchers are designed to encourage small business owner/operators
(including home based businesses) to take a more active approach to identifying their training needs and the way in which they want to access training.

Increased training has been shown to assist small business owners/operators improve their productivity and competitiveness and support them through the early years of establishment.

Training is also known to assist established small businesses to grow and keep abreast of new trends.

The 2008 Small Business Smart Business Program is delivered state wide through a network of Small Business Smart Business Administrators.

Employment Directions Employment Directions

The State Government, as part of its election commitments, undertook to review its labour market programs to ensure they continued to meet the needs of the community of Western Australia. The scope of this review was extended with a view to re-defining what employment means in the current global environment and developing a new vision and direction in which to take employment into the future.

Students Guide to Training

A short, easily understandable brochure has been produced to provide consumers with some information to consider when thinking about doing some Training.

Choosing to do some study or training can involve the investment a lot of time and money by a consumer.

The Students Guide to Training suggests questions a potential student should ask themselves at the start of their investigation - then questions to ask a training organisation, to help work out whether they can provide what the student needs.

The brochure is available from the Career Development Centre in City Central Building Level 2, 166 Murray St (Mall), Perth and on the Career Development Centre web site.


Read Write Now

This initiative offers one-on-one literacy and numeracy tutoring to adults free of charge. It is designed to be accessible and flexible, with the tutor and student working within an individually designed program, to achieve the personal goals of the student.

CPAP WA Cleaner Production Action Plan

In November 2001, the Department of Training became a signatory to the Western Australian Cleaner Production Statement. The Statement is essentially a Statement of Intent calling on government, employers and the general community to consider cleaner production and eco-efficiency seriously and act accordingly.

As a signatory organisation the Department has endorsed the Statement's intent and has developed an action plan addressing how the Department will further the promotion of cleaner production.

The Profit from Experience program is designed to help support mature age people to re-enter the workforce. It will also help employers to profit from the skills, knowledge and experience which mature age people offer.

SkillIT

Information Technology Traineeships to create skilled labour force.
The Department of Training has launched an important new initiative, SkillIT to help avert the looming skills shortage in information technology. More SkillIT information is available in PDF format [PDF, 302kbs]. An important advantage of the traineeship is that each employer can tailor the training to meet the needs of their business.

First Click is designed to increase computer literacy among the 400,000 adult Western Australians who have no computing or Internet-skills and who do not want to enrol in a formal course at TAFE or a university. Grants are available for community computer literacy projects.

The Department of Education and Training offers individual grants of up to $12,000 for Adult Community Education projects.  The aim of the grants is to increase the participation of under represented groups in adult community education activities.
